Couples Counseling

I offer couples counseling in person in Barre, Vermont, and via telehealth throughout Vermont and Maryland.

What Couples Counseling Looks Like

We meet together, either in my office or online. I watch how the two of you interact, listen to what each of you is concerned about, and then give you feedback. From there we practice new ways of interacting right there in the session, rather than only talking about them.

I also bring a trauma lens to this work. I pay attention to what sets each of you off, because a reaction that seems out of proportion in the moment is often connected to something unresolved from much earlier. We often try, without realizing it, to get a partner to resolve something a parent never did. I notice when that is happening, I name it, and we work on it together.

Who This Helps

Couples who want to heal their relationship, communicate better, and feel closer and more connected to each other. Some come in wanting to learn how to trust each other again.

Common Questions

Do we have to be in the same room?

Ideally you are close enough to each other to reach across. There are moments where I may ask you to look at each other, hold a hand, or offer some other comforting gesture, and that is easier in person or when the two of you are sitting together. If that is not possible for a particular session, we can still work, but being together helps.
