Family Therapy

I offer family therapy in person in Barre, Vermont, and via telehealth throughout Vermont and Maryland. Most of the families I work with are a parent or parents and their child, working through something together.

Getting to Know Each Person

I like to get to know each family member’s perspective, and sometimes that means meeting with someone alone to do this. From there, I teach the family how to communicate better with one another. Validating and reflective listening are usually the top two skills people need in this dynamic. I draw from a structural family therapy model.

I also draw from my background in trauma work.  There are often dynamics at play where family members are triggering each other unknowingly and unintentionally.  I like to understand how each person’s background is influencing the dynamic today.

Who This Helps

Many of the families I work with come to me because a child or teen is struggling, and everyone else is trying to figure out how to help and how to navigate it together. Whatever’s bringing your family in, we’ll figure out together where to focus.

Common Questions

Can you see family members who live in different states?

It depends on where everyone is.  I am licensed in Vermont and Maryland, so I can work with family members located in either of those states.  If someone in the family lives elsewhere, say one person in Vermont and another in California, I am not able to legally provide therapy to the person outside my licensed states.  If you are not sure how that applies to your family, reach out and we can sort it out before you commit to anything.

Can you meet with my adult children and me?

Yes.  Family therapy is not only for families with young children at home.  I am happy to work with adult children and their parents.
