Men's Mental Health

I offer therapy for men in person in Barre, Vermont, and via telehealth throughout Vermont and Maryland.

Why Men Come to See Me

Going to therapy still is not the norm for a lot of men, though that is changing. In my experience, the men who reach out are often doing it for the first time, and they arrive with a fair amount of skepticism about whether it will be worth their while.

I have found I connect well with men, partly because I pay attention to the expectations most men have grown up with rather than pretending those expectations are not there. I bring humor into sessions. I am willing to be frank, which most of the men I work with prefer to being handled carefully. And I take seriously that many men want to understand what is happening, why it is happening, and what they can actually do about it, so I work that way rather than asking you to sit in feelings without a direction.

None of this means the work stays on the surface. It means the way it looks is different.

Common Questions

Will this actually help, or is it just talking?

It helps if you let it. To be more direct about that: therapy works when you are willing to look at things you would rather not look at. What you get out of it is real skills you can use, and a real understanding of why you feel the way you do. Not just an hour of talking about your week.

What will I get out of therapy?

Real skills, and real understanding about why you feel the way you do. Skills so you have something to actually do when things get hard, and understanding so the reactions that feel like they come out of nowhere start making sense. Most people find those two things reinforce each other.
